WW I Soldiers Memorial

Soldiers remembered on the War Memorial, St Marys Church, Bleasby

The Memorial records the following soldiers who were killed during WW1. Originally, nine names were recorded, but two others George Marsh and William Wales were added, with permission from the Southwell Diocese,  following research in 2014.

Lieut. Leonard Earnest Gill – 7thBtn. Sherwood Foresters – killed 17th September,1917 – Age 25

• CWWG – Level Crossing Cemetery – Fampoux (Battle of Arras)
• He was from Hyson Green, son of Mrs G Gill, and the only link to Bleasby found was from his probate record in 1917. His mother came to live at the Star and Garter Hazelford as hotel manager at that time.

Sergeant Charles Enos – 1st/8thBtn. Sherwood Foresters – killed 14th October, 1915 – Age 23

• He was the son of Mrs W M Cox of Lowdham. His wife was Florence Cox of Bleasby. She was the daughter of Joseph and Fanny Oliver (sister of Harold – see below), of Notown, Bleasby. 

Private George William Andrew –2ndBtn. Sherwood Foresters - killed 8th October, 1918 – Age 22

• CWWG – Brancourt Le Grand Military Cemetery
• He was the son of William and Harriet Andrew. By 1911 Harriet had remarried and was now Mrs Joseph Guy. He was a farmer in Bleasby.

​Private Harold Oliver – 2nd/7thBtn. Sherwood Foresters – killed 21st March, 1918 – Age 29

•  He was the son of Joseph and Fanny Oliver, of Swiss Cottage, Notown, Bleasby. His wife was Kate Andrew, daughter of George Andrew (Snr), who was lodging at Fishermens’s Rest in 1891, where he was the landlord 

Corporal Jack L James – 2ndBtn. Grenadier Guards – killed 11th September, 1914 – Age 20

• CWWG – Guards Grave, Villers, Cotterets Forest
• He was the son of William and Elizabeth James, of The Old Cottage, Gypsy Lane, Bleasby

Private Thomas Shepperd –  1st/5thBtn. Lincolnshire Regiment – killed 19th June, 1917 – Age 40

• CWWG – Arras Memorial
• No link to Bleasby found – so far. He was born in Lowdham, the son of Henry and Mary Shepherd of Epperstone. His birth certificate shows his name as Tom Harry Shephard.  

Sapper Frederick Marsh – 546 Field Coy., Royal Engineers – killed 4th September, 1918 – Age 19

• CWWG – Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport
• He was the youngest of six sons of Joseph and Emily Marsh, of Gibsmere and Horstead, Notown, Bleasby

Private George Marsh – Sherwood Foresters – died 24th June, 1923 – age 29

• Buried St Marys Church, Bleasby – died of Pulmonary Phthisis (TB)
• He was one of the older brothers of Frederick Marsh.

Private Henry Palmby – 22ndDurham Light Infantry – killed 27th May, 1918 – age 18

• He was the son of George and Hannah Palmby, of Rudsey Cottage, Goverton.

Sapper Herbert Mills -  229 Field Coy., Royal Engineers – killed 9th April, 1918 – Age 38

• CWWG – Ploegsteert Memorial
• He was the son of Herbert and Mary Mills,  and husband of Edith Mills, of North Farm, Bleasby

Private William Henry Brett Wales – 7thBtn., Royal Fusiliers – killed 21st August, 1918 – Age 18

• He was the son of William and Evangeline Wales , born Halloughton, but moved to Epperstone
