Project: Jubilee Ponds Orchard
In 2023 Bleasby Parish Council decided to the purchase of 7 fruit trees, to be planted at Jubilee Ponds to create a community meadow along the track that leads to the main flower meadow.
A selection of different fruit trees were chosen to provide an extended period of blossom in the spring and a variety of fruit in the autumn.
The choice of variety and root stock were selected to provide high yields of fruit and robust, fast growing trees.
Not only will this improve the aesthetic of this area it will also increase biodiversity and provide a source of fruit for parishioners.
In February 2024, Grasshoppers planted the trees and will continue to manage them throughout the seasons. Bleasby Parish Council use a contractor to maintain the grass around the area.
It was a great morning and we all learn't how to plant a bare root fruit tree. It will take the trees a few years before they start bearing any quantity of fruit, but by 2030 they should be producing enough for the community to start picking their own.
As you walk towards the Main Meadow, the order of the trees are:
Blenheim Orange apple
Czar plum
Concorde pear
Mech's Prolific quince
Merryweather damson
Greensleeves apple
Butterball crab apple
